Mercy College Volleyball Battles for Two More Wins to Run Streak to Five Straight
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Mercy College women's volleyball team captured a pair of 3-2 victories on Saturday, September 8, first defeating Bloomfield, before taking host Philadelphia University in the final match of the day. The wins stretched the Mavericks' win streak to five straight as they improved to 5-1 on the year.
In Mercy's first match of the day, the Mavericks cruised to a 30-19 game one decision, but Bloomfield took the next two by scores of 30-28, and 30-19. Mercy battled back with a 30-26 win in game four and a 15-13 edge in the deciding game five.
Freshman Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led the Mavericks with 20 kills and added three service aces. Sophomore Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and senior Mariola St. Fleur (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) each had 15 kills, adding 22 and 17 digs, respectively. Junior Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) posted a career-high 58 assists.
Philadelphia University jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 30-20, and 30-16 decisions in the final match. Mercy battled back by taking three straight to extend the win streak, 30-24, 30-23, and 18-16.
St. Fleur paced the Mavericks with 32 kills and picked up 18 more digs. Senior Natalee Carty (Kingston, Jamaica) registered 19 kills and 24 digs, while Smith put up 50 assists.
Mercy will return to action on Wednesday, September 12, at St. Rose before competing in the Bryant Invitational on September 14 and 15.
