Mavericks Track & Field Teams Compete At Manhattan Opener

Mercy College indoor track team opens its 2009-10 season against Division I competition.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Mercy College men’s and women’s indoor track & field team opened its 2009-10 season against Division I competition at the Manhattan College Opener on Tuesday in Draddy Gymnasium.

On the men’s side, freshman Efrain Arzola (Yonkers, N.Y.) was the lone event winner with a first-place finish in the 600-meter run. Arzola crossed the tape at 1:38.0. Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, Conn.) finished at Arzola’s heels with a time of 1:42.6.

Five student-athletes competed in the 55-meter dash. Of the five, Jamil Jefferson (Staten Island, N.Y.) had the best head time at 6.3 seconds. Had he qualified for the finals, Jefferson would have tied for first with the same time.

In the 55-meter hurdles, Elizer Riquelme finished second at eight seconds.

In the longer sprints, Riquelme finished third in the 300-meter dash with a time of 39.1 seconds. Mike Munch (West Babylon, N.Y.) finished fourth with a time of 44.6. Piotr Keuzyna (Riverhead, N.Y.). Jefferson and T.J. DeCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) also competed.

Off the track, Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, Conn.) finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.50 meters (21 feet, 4 inches). Munch finished seventh in the event with jump of 4.90 meters (16 feet, 1 inch).

On the women’s side, Sasha Atkins (Bronx, N.Y.) finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 10.09 meters (33 feet, 1.25 inches). Atkins was also the winner of the 300-meter dash with a time of 48.4 seconds.e

On the track, Mercy College dominated the sprinting field. In the 55-meter finals, Abigail Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) finished second out of six with a time of 7.9 seconds. Freshman Stephanie DiLegge (West Islip, N.Y.) came in third with a time of 8.3 seconds. Kerry Goodnight (Bayport, N.Y.), Jamie McPartland (N. Massapequa) and Brittany Ott (Copiague, N.Y.) also competed.

The track & field Mavericks have a quick turn-around as they will head to Fordham University on Friday, Dec. 4 to compete in the Fordham Opener at Lombardi Field House in Bronx, N.Y.
