Mavericks Indoor Track & Field Competes in Fordham Christmas Classic

BRONX, NY – The Mercy College indoor
track and field teams competed at the Fordham Christmas Classic on
Friday, turning in some solid performances to close out the 2008
calendar year.
Junior Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) posted a
second place finish in the men’s high jump, clearing the bar
at five feet, eight inches. In the long jump, sophomore
Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) placed fourth at 19
feet, nine and a half inches, and Overton finished eighth at 16
feet, nine and a quarter inches. Joon Yeob Lee also placed 11th in
the men’s 60-meter dash at 6.3 seconds and twin brother
Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT) finished 14th in the
400-meter run at 57.9 seconds. Senior Justin Sanabria
(Bronx, NY) placed 14th in the 3000-meter run at
12:08.1
Mercy College had four participants in the men’s 800-meter
run with senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY)
leading the way in 11th place at 2:13.0. Senior Kevin
Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) finished 14th at 2:21.3,
followed by senior John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) in
15th at 2:22.2 and senior Daniel Reeves (Babylon,
NY) in 16th at 2:28.3.
The Mavericks had three women post third place finishes on the
day. Senior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY)
finished the 800-meter run in 2:36.3 for one third place spot.
Junior Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) cleared the
high jump at four feet, seven inches for another, and junior
Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) recorded a throw of 31
feet and one half inch in the shot put. Wong added a sixth place
showing in the shot put at 24 feet, four and a quarter inches, and
Atkins finished sixth in the long jump at 11 feet, two and a
quarter inches.
Mercy College will be back in action on Saturday, January 10 at
the Yale Classic in New Haven, CT.
