DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's cross country team finished fifth out of twelve full squads at the Lehman Lightning Invitational held at Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday.
The Mavericks placed three runners among the top 24 scorers with Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) placing second, Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) in fourth and John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) in 24th place. Rounding out the scorers was Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in 51st place and Justin Sanabria (Bronx, NY) in 68th place.
Cannariato was among the leaders throughout the race, finishing the event in a time of 28:36. Yarema ran one of his best races, finishing at 28:51. Benvin, a convert to distance running over the summer, turned in a strong performance and Sanabria ran a career best time.
"On balance, I was happy about the way that the team approached the race," said Head Coach Dr. Darryl Bullock. "Tom and Peter ran very well and I thought John and Justin stepped up in a huge way. We still have three weeks before the ECC Championships and this team is beginning to gel."
Both the men's and women's teams will return to action on October 18th at the University at Albany Cross Country Invitational.
