Mavericks Begin Season at the Iona Meet of Champions

BRONX, NY - The Mercy College cross country team kicked off its season on Saturday at the Iona Meet of Champions in Van Cortlandt Park.

Senior Thomas Cannariato (Goshen, NY) paced all Mavericks' harriers with a time of 28:08.2 on the 8k course. Senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) crossed the finish line next at 28:46.0.

The Mavericks had four student-athletes compete in their first collegiate cross country race. Senior John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) finished with a time of 31:40.4; he was followed by senior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) with a time of 35:16.9. Sophomore Jonathan Holland (Roanoke, VA) came in with a time of 37:24.7 and senior Justin Sanabria (Bronx, NY) followed closely behind.

On the men's side, the University of Michigan finished first, followed by Penn State and Iona College.

The Mavericks' women's team did not compete. Penn State took first place for the women, while Cornell and Boston College took second and third place.

Mercy will be back in action on Saturday, September 27 at the Connecticut College Invitational.
