Seniors Look to Lead Mercy College Cross Country into 2008

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College cross country teams are ready to hit the trails for the 2008 season. With seasoned veterans and wide-eyed newcomers, the Mavericks are poised to contend for high team and individual honors.

Head coach Darryl Bullock's men's team will be led by seniors Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) and Thomas Cannariarto (Goshen, NY) who have the most experience and previous success.

"They are both physically and mentally prepared for this season. It's what you expect from your seniors," Bullock said. "They should really challenge to make the All-Conference teams this year."

Seniors John Benvin (Thornwood, NY), Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and Daniel Reeves (Babylon, NY) give the Mavericks a bevy of leadership and depth.

Katelyn Klobus

Bullock believes his seniors can finish their collegiate careers strong.

"Kevin is in the best shape that I've ever seen him in," Bullock said. "My expectations are high, especially for the seniors, because they want to go out on top."

The men also have a few newcomers to the program. Sophomore Jonathan Holland (Roanoke, VA), junior Jamsel Reyes (Monroe, NY) and senior Justin Sanabria (Bronx, NY) will compete for the Mavericks.

The women's team will also be led by a senior, Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY).

"Katelyn has given her best to the program for each of her three years and we anticipate her return to the elite ranks of female athletes in the conference," Bullock said.

Last season Klobus was the top finisher for the Mavericks in every cross country race. Klobus will be joined by senior Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) and juniors Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) and Janet Wong (Vancouver, BC, Canada). Wong is an accomplished conference champion in both javelin and the high jump.

The women's team will be joined by freshmen Rebecca Bullard (Cold Spring, NY) and Shatanna Miller (Bronx, NY) and sophomore Rina Moran (Yonkers, NY).

"Rebecca, Shatanna and Rina provide some depth we've been looking for," Bullock said.

The Mavericks will have a challenging schedule this season beginning at the Iona Meet of Champions in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Mavericks will run against the country's best cross country programs and will be able to see where they stack up.

"I just want our athletes to be able to say that they competed against the best," Bullock said.

Mercy will also run in the Connecticut College Invitational, the Lehman Lightning Invitational,

the Albany Invitational and then the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships at Sunken Meadows State Park.

"Our biggest test will be the conference meet because of the high caliber of competition and it's at a new venue," Bullock said. "We hope to use course familiarity to our advantage as it was the high school course for Peter Yarema and Katelyn Klobus."

Bullock believes that the new more trying schedule will benefit the cross country program as a whole.

"You don't get better running against people you know you can beat."
