NEW YORK, NY - Sophomore Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) and senior David Hunte (Labrea, Trinidad & Tobago) each set new school records for the Mercy College track and field program at the New Balance NYC Challenge on Saturday.
Lee established his new mark in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.47 meters to place 12th. Hunte put up his record setting performance in the triple jump with a mark of 14.16 meters, placing fifth. He also competed in the long jump, posting a best mark of 6.24 meters to finish 17th.
Junior Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) gave Mercy another top 10 finish, placing seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.85 meters. A trio of Mavericks competed in the men's 800 meter run with junior Jamsel Reyes (Haverstraw, NY) leading the way in 43rd place at 2:03.37. He was followed by senior Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) in 54th at 2:18.99 and senior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in 55th at 2:30.49.
Senior John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) paced Mercy in the 1500 meter run, finishing 41st at 4:45.7, while senior Daniel Reeves (Babylon, NY) followed in 43rd at 4:58.8. Sophomore Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT) rounded out the men's competitors with a time of 56.95 seconds to finish 60th in the 400 meter run.
On the women's side, junior Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) posted the Mavericks third top 10, placing eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 meters, and added a 15th place finish in the javelin at 30.55 meters. Senior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) registered a time of 5:29.83 to finish 18th in the 1500 meter run and placed 35th in the 800 meter run at 2:30.94.
The Mavericks will close out the 2009 campaign at the ECAC/IC4A Championships this weekend.
