QUEENS, NY - The Mercy College track & field teams opened up the 2009 outdoor campaign at Queensborough Community College on Saturday. The Mavericks set two men's school records and notched two first place finishes in women's field events.
The team of Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT), Jamsel Reyes (Monroe, NY), David Hunte (LaBrea, Trinidad and Tobago) and Craig Williams (Brooklyn, NY) established a 4x200 meter mark of 1:38.05. Williams, who anchored the squad, had everyone buzzing with his 200 meter leg, coming from way back to just be nipped at the tape.
The second record foursome in the sprint medley relay consisted of Lee, Williams, Reyes and Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT). They finished second in a time of 3:53.44 only a few minutes after their 4x200 performance.
Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) led all female competitors in both the high jump and the javelin. She cleared the bar at 1.47 meters and tossed the javelin into a headwind at 31.89 meters. The javelin mark smashed the event record by over 20 feet.
Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) traversed the oval for a second place finish in the 1500 meter run in a time of 5:34.61.The men's 1500 meter run saw a ninth place finish by John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) (4:53), an 11th place finish by Daniel Reeves (Babylon, NY) (4:55) and Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) (5:24) in 18th place.
Action resumes next Saturday at the NJIT/St. Peter's Invitational in Jersey City, NJ.
