Mavericks Shine at USATF Indoor Track & Field Open

NEW YORK, NY -  The Mercy College indoor track and field teams posted several outstanding performances at the USATF Open, held at the New Balance Track and Field Center on Saturday evening.

The Mavericks started well as Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) finished second in the men's open long jump with a leap of 5.99, narrowly missing a gold medal by .01 meter. David Hunte (LaBrea, Trinidad & Tobago) finished fourth at 5.85 meters. Hunte also posted a season best mark of 13.92 meters in the men's triple jump to earn a silver medal. 

Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) finished eighth in the 300 meter run with a time of 11:23. Jamsel Reyes (Monroe, NY) continues to impress in the 400 meter and the men's mile. His 53.36 (fifth place) and 4:50.55 times are team and individual season best marks. Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT) ran the 400 meter in 57.24 while John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) ran a 5:23 mile.

Craig Williams (Bronx, NY) ran the 200 meter in 24.35 seconds to finish in 11th place. Daniel Reeves (Babylon, NY) ran a season best of 2:17.52 in the 800 meter and Benvin finished in 2:25.54. Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.72 meters.

Janet Wong (Vancouver, BC) was a double medalist winning the gold in the women's open high jump of 1.47 meters. She also took third in the open shot put with a toss of 7.25 meters. Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) added a fourth place finish in the open 800 meter in a time of 2:35.59.

The Mavericks will close out the 2008-2009 indoor season when they return to the New Balance Track and Field Center on March 7th to compete in the USATF Metropolitan Championships.
