The indoor track & field season is in full swing and outdoor season is right around the corner. There were some great performances during the first meet after winter break.

The Mercy College indoor track & field team traveled to Wesleyan University for the Cardinal Classic in Middletown, Connecticut. Leading the way was senior David Hunte (Labrea, Trinidad and Tobago) who came in fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.16 meters. He also ran the 55-meter dash in 7.01 seconds coming in 22nd overall.

Junior Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) took a fifth place finish in the high jump. He cleared the bar with a mark of 5'11'' in his first jump of the year. A transfer student to Mercy College, junior Jamsel F. Reyes (Monroe, NY), set the school record in the 600m by finishing with a time of 1:29.38 and taking 15th place.

Reyes also ran in the distance medley relay with senior John Benvin (Thornwood, NY), sophomore Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT) and senior Daniel Reeves (Babylon, NY). The team finished 12th with a time of 12:38.

Benvin and Reeves both competed in the 800m. Benvin crossed the line with a time of 2:25.76 to finish 20th. Reeves finished with a time of 2:26.57 and came in 21st. Following closely behind was senior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) who finished 24th with a time of 2:32.45.

Joon Hoon Lee also competed in the 400m. He ran 59.14 finishing 31st overall. His brother sophomore Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) ran the 55-meter dash and came in 39th to finish with a time of 7.32. He also competed in the long jump and was tied for 16th overall with a jump of 6.0 meters.

Rounding out the men was junior Craig Williams (Bronx, NY) who finished 39th in the 200m with a time of 25.16. The only female competing for Mercy College was senior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) who ran the 800m. She finished 7th overall with a time of 2:37.53.

The team has started off strong and is prepared to continue competing at a high level. The Mavericks will be competing at two venues this weekend. The team will be at the New Balance Invitational and the CTC Indoor Championships.
