Mavericks Set New School Marks in Track and Field Indoor Opener
BRONX, NY - The Mercy College men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season at the Fordham Christmas Classic, setting several new school records while competing against all Division I schools.
The first mark to fall was the women's long jump as sophomore Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) established a new school record with a jump of 4.20 meters to finish second overall. Junior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) also set a new Mercy record in the 300m run with a time of 11:51.1 to finish sixth overall. Junior Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) placed fifth in the women's shot put with a mark of 7.22 meters, and the sprint medley team of Atkins, Klobus, sophomore Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada), and Natalya Wells established a school record of 5:00.9. Wong took second place in the high jump at 1.47 meters, and Wells placed 10th in the 800 meter run at 3:14.3.
On the men's side, freshman Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) set a school record in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.08 meters to take first place. Freshman Jonathan Reyes placed second in the 60 meter event with a time of 7.2 seconds. In the men's 3000 meter run, junior Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) placed 12th at 9:49.8, senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) finished 14th at 9:55.6, and senior Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) placed 16th at 10:17.0. Junior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) placed 15th in the mile at 5:20.7, and Reyes finished 5th in the 200 meter run at 27.9 seconds.
The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, December 29 at the Colgate Games.
