Mercy College Men's Cross Country Tabbed for Fifth in ECC Preseason Poll; Women Picked to Finish Sixth
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Mercy College men's cross country team has been picked to finish fifth at this year's East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships and the women were tabbed for sixth in a poll voted on by the league's head coaches. Adelphi was picked to repeat as champions for both the men and the women.
The Mercy men's squad finished fifth at last year's ECC Championships with four runners finishing in the top 30. Returning from that team is junior Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY), senior Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY), senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY), senior Daniel Reeves (Babylon, NY), and junior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
The women did not compete as a team in 2006, however, Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY), now a junior, earned a spot on the All-ECC Second Team as she placed 12th. Klobus finished in a time of 21:28 to become only the second female in Mercy College cross country history to earn All-Conference honors. Also returning are juniors Susan Paulsen (Goshen, NY) and Latasha Williams (Bronx, NY), and sophomore Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada)
"This is becoming a very competitive running sports conference and I believe the results of this preseason poll will be vastly different come the East Coast Conference Cross-country Championships in October," said Head Coach Dr. Darryl Bullock. "I've got an experienced group of men who should compete for a higher finish and the women led by Katelyn Klobus will be ready."
The 2007 East Coast Conference Championship Meet will take place at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx on Sunday, October 21 with the women's race beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by the men's competition at 11:00 a.m.
