Five Records Fall as Mercy Track and Field Posts 14 Top Ten Finishes at Kings Point Invitational

KINGS POINT, NY - The Mercy College outdoor track and field teams turned in 14 top ten finishes, including a pair of first place finishes by sophomore Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) and David Hunte (Trinidad & Tobago), and set five new school records in the process at the Kings Point Invitational on Saturday.

Wong set her new school outdoor mark in the high jump with a career best height of 1.53 meters to finish third overall. She also took first place in the javelin with a toss of 30.90 meters. Hunte finished first and broke his own program record in the triple jump with a mark of 14.02 meters.

Senior Eric Duffy (Montrose, NY) added a school record toss of 42.16 meters in the javelin, finishing second overall. Sophomore Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) recorded a leap of 4.70 meters for another program best in the long jump, placing third. She also took fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.81 seconds and 13th in the 200 meter dash at 28.98 seconds. Freshman Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) registered his record in the long jump with a leap of 6.25 meters to finish fourth.

In the men's mile, senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) finished second with a personal best time of 4:45.82 and senior Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) placed fourth at 4:50.62. Freshman Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT) added a personal best time of 2:19.30 in the 800 meter run to finish 17th, with junior Jose Gomez (Monroe, CT) finishing 10th at 2:10.96 and junior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) placing 24th at 2:23.93.

Junior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) posted a second place finish in the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.77.  Sophomore Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.80 meters.  Also on the men's side, junior Lyndon Walters (Queens, NY) ran a time of 12.04 seconds to finish fourth and junior John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) took 13th at 13.64.  Walters finished fifth in the 200 meter dash at 24.02 and Benvin finished 13th at 27.79 seconds.

The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, May 10 at the New Balance NYC Qualifying Meet.
