Mercy Track and Field Gets Record Performances from Atkins and Hunte at Yale Springtime Invitational

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Mercy College outdoor track and field teams competed at the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday with a field of primarily Division I programs. The Mavericks came home with two new school records set by Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) and David Hunte (Trinidad & Tobago).

Atkins set her mark in the women's long jump with a leap of 4.38 meters to finish in 16th place overall.  Hunte took fourth place in the men's triple jump with a new outdoor record mark of 13.86 meters.

Atkins also took 10th place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.89 seconds, and 11th place in the 100 meter dash at 13.31 seconds. Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) finished ninth in both the javelin (27.50 meters) and the high jump (1.45 meters).  Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) also competed in the javelin, finishing 12th with a throw of 23.90 meters, and Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) placed 41st in the 800 meter run at 2:34.

On the men's side, Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) finished 15th in the long jump with a leap of 5.92 meters. John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) placed 35th in the 100 meter dash at 13.30 seconds and 25th in the 200 meter dash at 26.95 seconds. In the 1500 meter run, Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) finished in a time of 4:28.95 to place 55th, followed by Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) in 57th place at 4:31.33, and Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) in 65th at 4:52.08. The Maverick men also had four competitors in the 800 meter run, led by Yarema in 56th at 2:13.05. Gomez took 61st at 2:15, Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) finished 64th at 2:20.33, and Joon Hoon Lee (New Haven, CT) placed 65th at 2:23.

The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, May 3, with the Kings Point Invitational, hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
