Mercy Track and Field Racks Up Three Top Finishes at Coach "O" Invitational

KINGS POINT, NY - In their final tune-up before next weekend's Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) championships the Mercy College track and field team produced three top collegiate performances on the day at the Coach "O" Invitational hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Sophomore Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) won the men's high jump with a leap of 1.85m. Not to be outdone, junior triple jump standout David Hunte (LaBrea, Trinidad) won the triple jump (13.39m). Sophomore Janet Wong (Vancouver, BC) negotiated a wet runway to become the top collegian in the women's javelin with a toss of 32.20m. She was second overall finishing only behind Olympic hopeful Grace Zollman.

Freshman Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) finished seventh in the men's long jump (6.0m); Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) ran a personal best of 4:50 in the mile; Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) finished 18th in the 800m in a time of 2:34.34; Lyndon Walters (Queens, NY) doubled in the 100m and 200m finishing 13th and 20th, respectively. John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) also doubled in the 100m and 200m finishing 43rd and 67th. On the women's side, Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) led the sprint corps running the 100m in 13.26 seconds and the 200m in 27.57 seconds. Jose Gomez (Monroe,NY) ran the 800m in 2:12 and the mile in 5:03. Kevin Gibson (Buenas Aires, Argentina) traversed the oval twice in a time of 2:23. Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) ran the mile in 4:58.

"I was encouraged by the support each team member provided to each other throughout the day," said Head Coach Dr. Darryl Bullock. "We had a lot of positive energy and direction heading into next weekend."

The Mavericks will return to action on April 19 and 20, at the CTC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by DeSales University.
