Wong, Overton Highlight Mercy Track and Field at Osprey Open
POMONA, NJ - The Mercy College track and field team turned in several strong performances at the Osprey Open, hosted by Rickard Stockton College, on Saturday.
Sophomore Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) highlighted the day for the Maverick women. Wong bested the field in the javelin, winning the event with a throw of 36.49 meters. Junior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) took 19th place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:40.65.
On the men's side, sophomore Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) turned in a fifth place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.87 meters. In the long jump, freshman Joon Yeob Lee (New Haven, CT) placed 20th with mark of 5.88 meters. Senior Eric Duffy (Montrose, NY) finished 24th in the 400 meter dash at 53.12 seconds and 40th in the 200 meter dash at 24.21 seconds. Sophomore John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) also competed in the 200 meter dash, finishing 71st at 27.34 seconds, and placed 54th in the 100 meter dash at 13.79 seconds.
Mercy had three competitors in the men's 1500 meter run. Junior Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) led the way in 27th at 4:35.90, followed by senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) in 30th at 4:39.18, and Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) in 31st at 4:41.02. Gomez also finished 43rd in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.69 and junior Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) placed 52nd at 2:10.47.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, April 12, at the USMMA Coach "O" Invitational in Kings Point, NY, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
