Mavericks Participate in 10th Annual Front Runners Indoor Track & Field Meet
BRONX, NY - The Mercy College indoor track and field team continued its string of strong performances at the 10th Annual Front Runners Meet on Friday, held at the New Balance National Track and Field Center.
Sophomore Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) literally walked her way in to the college track and field record book by finishing second in the 1500m racewalk. Wong, who had not competed in the event since high school, covered the distance in 8:38.7 seconds. Junior Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) finished her indoor campaign with a solid second place finish in the women's 800m with a time of 2:32.97. Sophomore Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) competed in the 60m and 200m sprints. She ran 8.46 seconds and 28.54 seconds, respectively. As a team the women finished in third place, just a couple of points short of second.
On the men's side, the Mavericks were led by senior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) who doubled running the mile in a personal best time of 4:50.12 and coming back a few minutes later to complete the two mile run in 10:34. Junior John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) also doubled by racing in the 60m and 200m sprints, and junior Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) ran the 800m in a time of 2:11.67.
On Saturday, David Hunte (Ontario, Canada) will compete at the Metropolitan USATF Championship in the triple jump. Te meet will also be held at the New Balance National Track & Field Center in Washington Heights.
With this the Mavericks will conclude an indoor season that saw a number of school records fall. The outdoor track and field season will begin on Saturday, March 29th as the teams travel cross river to the United States Military Academy at West Point for the Dick Shea Invitational.
