Abdias Suero Named Assistant Coach for Mercy College Track & Field/Cross Country

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Abdias Suero has been named assistant track and field/cross country coach at Mercy College, Head Coach Dr. Darryl Bullock announced.

Suero will work primarily with sprinters, middle distance runners and relays. He will also be responsible for team conditioning.

"Coach Suero brings a wealth of knowledge to our program in many areas of running and racing," said Bullock. "His knowledge of training routines, anatomy and physiology leads me to believe that our athletes will be stronger and better prepared to compete at the championship level. He is well respected among area coaches and will be a real asset in identifying high achieving student-athletes in New York City."

Suero is currently a physical and health education teacher at Christopher Columbus High School in New York City, where he has been employed since 2005, and also served as head coach of the boys cross country and track and field team.

Prior to that, he was head coach of the George Washington High School boys cross country and track and field program from 1991-2004. Suero was also as an assistant coach with the Dominican Republic middle distance national team from 1985-88 and spent six years as a nutritionist with the national team.

Suero is a 1981 graduate of Pratt Institute, where he earned a bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics. He ran varsity track for four years at Pratt, earning All-American honors from 1979-81 in the 400 meter run. Suero also competed with the Dominican Republic National Team in the 400 meter run from 1979-85, advancing to the finals of the Central American Games. He went on to earn a doctorate in medicine from Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo in 1987, and a certificate in physical education from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez in 1989.
