Mercy Indoor Track & Field Sets New Records at Fordham Opener

            BRONX, NY -  The Mercy College indoor track and field teams had an encouraging start to their season at the Fordham University Opener on Friday, December 30.  The Flyers set several new program bests in the meet held at Fordham's Lombardi Center.

            Freshman Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) was the first ever Mercy College athlete to participate in a women's high jump event.  She placed seventh in her debut with a mark of 4' 9" (1.45m).

            Freshman Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) established a new school record for the women in the 200m, finishing second with a time of 27.1 seconds, only .3 behind the winner.

            Sophomore Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) gave the Flyers another school record of 12:06.2 in the 3000m, finishing third.

            Freshman Carl Spence (St. Catherine's, Jamaica) also made his personal debut with the squad, advancing to the finals of the men's 60m dash where he finished tied for third in a new school record time of 7.2 seconds.  He also placed 16th in the men's 400m in a time of 58.5 seconds.

            In other men's action, junior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) competed in the mile, finishing 18th in a time of 5:08.5. Junior Thomas Cannariato (Goshen, NY) placed 10th in the 800m with a time of 2:22.7.  Sophomore Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) ran the 1000m in a time of 2:56.2, finishing seventh. Freshman Nathaniel Rose (Queens, NY) finished seventh in the 200m with a time of 24.5 seconds.

            The men also competed in the 4x400m relay for the first time ever. Rose, Gomez, Cannariato and sophomore Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) teamed up in the event with Gibson running an inspired anchor leg to help the Flyers finish in seventh place at 3:51.16.

            "It was great to have participation in a broader number of events," said head coach Darryl Bullock. "I am looking forward to having some of our student-athletes seriously challenge for conference titles come championship season in February."

            Mercy returns to action on Saturday, December 9, at the Yale Lidlifter.
