at Iona Meet of Champions

            BRONX, NY - The Mercy College cross country teams competed at the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday, September 30. The men's team finished 18th out of 20, in a field made up primarily of Division I programs.

            Running in only his third collegiate race, junior Tom Cannariato (Goshen, NY) led the men's team with a time of 28:30 to finish 117th out of 174 competitors on the five mile course at Van Cortlandt Park. Senior Miguel Reyes (Haverstraw, NY) finished the race in 30:05, sophomore Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) posted a time of 30:15.3, junior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) finished at 30:48.6, and senior Edward Murray (West Islip, NY) posted a time of 31:11.0.

            On the women's side, Mercy did not compete as a team.  Sophomore Katelyn Klobus (Babylon, NY) paced the squad again, this time finishing the 3.7 mile course in a time of 26:40.  Freshman Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) completed the race in a time of 32:29.0, and sophomore Latasha Williams (Bronx, NY) finished at 41:04.7.

            "I believe that today, Tommy began what I know will be a highly successful collegiate racing career," said head coach Darryl Bullock.  "Katelyn continues her solid work in preparation for the conference championships. She ran well all week and I think that she is going to have some great performances in October."

            Mercy returns to action on Friday, October 6, at the College of St. Rose Joust, beginning at 4:00 pm.
