Mercy's Janet Wong Takes First Place in the Javelin and High Jump at ECC Outdoor Championships
BRONX, NY - Freshman Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) continued her outstanding rookie campaign by taking first place in both the women's javelin throw and the high jump at Saturday's East Coast Conference (ECC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Her mark of 1.52 meters in the high jump established a new school record.
Sophomore Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) finished second behind Wong in the javelin, and freshman Stephanie Bann (New Cumberland, PA) placed fifth. Freshman Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) placed second in the shot put and set a new school record with a toss of 11.60 meters. Senior Sharon Sklar (Chappaqua, NY) took third place in the discus and fourth place in the shot put.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY), Fabian, Bann, and Wong finished third with a time of 5:04.1 in Mercy's first ever appearance in the event.
On the men's side, freshman Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) finished second in the high jump. Mercy's 4x800 meter relay team of Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY), Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Thomas Cannariato (Goshen, NY), and Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) also made the program's first ever appearance in the event.
"We ended the season with a lot of positives and identified continuing areas of need," said Head Coach Darryl Bullock. "The regular season has ended and we are looking forward to seeing Tyrik Overton and Janet Wong perform at next weekend's IC4A /ECAC Division I Track & Field Championships. Janet qualified with an early season javelin toss of 40.40m and Tyrik seeks to up his season best mark of 1.87m in the high jump."
The IC4A/ECAC Championships will take place at Princeton University on Sunday, May 13.
