Tyrik Overton Sets School Record in High Jump at Coach "O" Invitational; Janet Wong Takes First in Javelin
KINGS POINT, NY - Freshman Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) set a new school record in the men's high jump to highlight the Mercy College track and field team's day at the Coach "O" Invitational, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, April 14.
Overton placed fourth in the event, posting a mark of 1.87 meters to set a new program record. He also finished 28th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.89.
Freshman Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) won the women's javelin event with a toss of 36.16 meters, and finished fourth in the high jump at 1.47 meters. Sophomore Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) also put together a strong outing, finishing ninth in the women's mile with a time of 6:03, and followed up with a 22nd place finish in the 800 meter event at 2:37.67.
The Mercy men also got solid performances from Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) in the high jump, Schadrac St. Louis (Garnerville, NY) in the triple jump and 200 meter, Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) and Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in the 800 meter and John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) in the 100m and 200 dash.
"On the day, I saw an improved mental approach to racing and competing," said Mercy head coach Darryl Bullock. "Most of our top finishers are either freshmen or sophomores. We have a number of goals to accomplish during the next three weeks and we'll just need to keep improving."
Mercy's next meet will be on April 21-22, at DeSales University during the Collegiate Track Conference Championships.
