Janet Wong Takes First in the Javelin as Mercy College Opens Outdoor Track and Field Season at Bryant Invitational

SMITHFIELD, RI - Freshman Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada) helped give the Mercy College track and field team a strong start to the outdoor season, finishing first in the women's javelin and third in the high jump at the Bryant Invitational. Wong took the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 40.4 meters, and cleared the bar at 1.47 meters in the high jump.
Sophomore Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY) continued her strong performance, placing 10th out of 21 competitors in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:39.62. Senior Sharon Sklar (Chappaqua, NY) finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 7.49 meters, and 11th in the discus throw with a mark of 18.38 meters.
In the men's high jump, freshman Tyrik Overton (Tarrytown, NY) tied for sixth place with a leap of 1.78 meters. Also on the men's side, freshman Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) placed 21st in the 100 meter dash at 12.09 seconds. Sophomore John Benvin (Thornwood, NY) ran the event in 13.75 seconds to finish 33rd, and placed 36th in the 200 meter dash at 27.81 seconds. Sophomore Kevin Gibson (Buenos Aires, Argentina) paced three Mercy competitors in the 800 meter run, finishing 16th with a time of 2:11.40. Sophomore Jose Gomez (Monroe, NY) placed 21st at 2:17.36, and junior Peter Yarema (Northport, NY) finished 24th in a time of 2:25.37.
Mercy will be back in action on Saturday, April 14, at the Coach "O" Invitational.
