Softball Goes 1-1 in ECC Doubleheader with Queens
FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2012) - On Friday afternoon in a make-up doubleheader from earlier in the season, the Mercy College softball team halved a doubleheader with East Coast Conference-opponent Queens College. The first game lasted nine innings and saw Mercy win 4-2, while Game #2 witnessed Queens win, 5-2. After today's action, the Mavericks' record overall is now 19-22 and 7-15 in the league, while the Knights move to 16-13 on the year and 9-12 in the ECC.
Game One: Mercy 4, Queens 2 (9 innings)
The contest remained scoreless for the first four and a half innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Queens scored two runs, but the Mavericks immediately answered back. In the top of the sixth frame, junior Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.) roped a two-run, game-tying homer to score herself and fellow junior Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.). Johnstone reached previously by a Knights fielding error.
The scoreboard stayed at 2-2 until the top of the ninth when Mercy struck for another pair of runs. This time is was Johnstone's turn to drive her teammates in as she smacked a double down the left field line, scoring senior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) and sophomore Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.).
In the circle, sophomore starter Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) was terrific as she threw all nine innings, improving her record to 10-9. She allowed two runs (zero earned) on five hits and whiffed nine Knights' batters.
Game Two: Queens 5, Mercy 2
Unlike the opening contest's slow offensive start, Queens struck for four runs in the bottom of the first. Mercy was able to grab two of those runs back in the third and fourth frames. However, Queens added one more in the fifth and secured the 5-2 victory.
For Mercy, Bentson, who batted leadoff in this game, went 2-for-4, while six of the other eight hitters in the line-up recorded a hit apiece. In the circle, sophomore Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) saw her record drop to 8-9 on the year (6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K).
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the diamond tomorrow, April 14 when they host the University of Bridgeport in ECC doubleheader action. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Smith Field.
