Softball Drops ECC Doubleheader to Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2012) – On Tuesday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team fell to Molloy College in an East Coast Conference twinbill, 8-0 and 2-0, at the Dean G. Skelos Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the wins, the Lions improved to 22-5 on the year and 12-0 in conference play. Following the defeats, the Mavericks slipped to 15-14 overall and 5-7 in the ECC.

Game One: Molloy 8, Mercy 0 (5 innings)

Mercy sophomore starter Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) held the Lions scoreless through two, but struggled in the third allowing three runs. Molloy was able to tack on five additional runs in the fourth and fifth frames and secured the 8-0 win.

For Mercy, sophomore first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) went 2-for-2. Sieber finished with five runs in 4.0 innings.

For the Lions, junior third baseman Haley Calderwood (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI, while senior catcher Josette Cavallaro (North Babylon, N.Y.) finished 2-for-3 with one run scored, a homer and three runs batted in. In the circle, junior starter Kelley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.) improved her season's record to 11-3 as she gave up four hits in five innings. She struck out six.

Game Two: Molloy 2, Mercy 0

In the bottom of the third inning, junior Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) broke up a scoreless game with an RBI double, plating freshman Lauren Alexander (Huntington, N.Y.). Molloy took a 1-0 lead.

Mercy starting hurler Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) held Molloy at bay until the sixth when senior Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.) homered to centerfield. That would be all the run support Lions junior starter Megan Butterworth (Bellmore, N.Y.) would need as she pitched the complete-game, five-hit shutout.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action on Thursday when they host another ECC-opponent in Dowling College. The doubleheader is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
