Mercy Softball Splits With #20 Molloy
The Mercy College softball team earned a split in a doubleheader against Molloy College, winning the first game, 6-5, before dropping the second, 1-0. Mercy is now 8-12 overall, and 2-6 in the East Coast Conference, while Molloy, who is ranked #20 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association national poll, is now 20-6 overall, and 5-1 in the ECC. Both games were Molloy home games, despite being played at Mercy College.
In game one, Mercy won in dramatic fashion, as junior Paige
Cauley
(Stratford, N.J./Iona College) hit a two-run home run in the top of
the seventh inning to clinch the game.
In the fourth inning, already down 4-0, Mercy came alive, scoring four runs on seven consecutive hits. Junior Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn/Bristol Central) began the scoring with a two-run homerun, her fourth of the season. Five back-to-back singles then plated two more runs.
Molloy rallied to score once in the fifth inning, retaking the lead and setting up Cauley’s heroics. Cauley led the attack with three hits in the game, scoring twice. In all, eight different Mavericks recorded base hits.
Junior Cait Rohme (Patchogue, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) earned the win, throwing six innings in relief.
In game two, the twentieth-ranked team in the land shut Mercy down. Mercy scratched out just one hit, a Methot single in the fifth. Methot was able to advance to third on an error, which allowed junior Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison) to reach base safely.
Junior Shanna Hicks (Marlboro, N.Y./SUNY New Paltz) was the hard luck loser, allowing just the one earned run over six innings, giving up six hits while fanning five.
Mercy hosts a pair of ECC opponents for doubleheaders in the upcoming days, with NYIT on Tuesday, and C.W. Post on Thursday.
