DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College sophomore Paige Cauley (Stratford, NJ) and junior Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) have been named ECC Softball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The pair played big roles in helping the Mavericks to a 4-1 start to the season, the program's best start after five games since 1987.
Cauley, a second baseman, batted .529 (9-for-17), hitting safely in each of the first five games of the season to go with a 1.059 slugging percentage. She knocked in five runs with four singles, three doubles, and two home runs, walked three times to post a .600 on base percentage, and stole a base. After an RBI double in the Mavericks' season-opening win versus St. Anselm, Cauley went 2-for-4 in game two against St. Anselm with a double and her first home run that held up as the game-winner. She then had two hits in each of the next four games, including a 2-for-4 performance versus Dakota Wesleyan with her second home run and three runs batted in.
Pereyo, a right-hander, was the winning pitcher in all four victories for the Mavericks. She notched two in relief and two as a starter. Pereyo allowed just six earned runs in 20 innings of work for a 2.70 ERA and struck out 15 batters along the way. In the first win over St. Anselm, she came on in relief for four innings, where she scattered five hits and allowed one earned run. Pereyo then started game two against St. Anselm, tossing the first five innings and allowing four earned runs while fanning two. She came on in relief again in a 2-2 tie against Dakota Wesleyan and tossed six shutout innings, yielding just two hits and striking out four. Pereyo closed out the week with a five-inning complete game three-hitter against Carlow, allowing one earned run and striking out eight batters.
The Mavericks continued their Florida trip on Monday with a doubleheader split against Bloomfield, falling 6-4 in the opener and bouncing back with a 5-2 win in game two. Cauley went 5-for-7 on the day with three doubles and Pereyo notched her fifth straight victory in the second contest. Mercy College will wrap up its southern swing on Tuesday versus Black Hills State and Carlow.
