DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College Head Softball Coach Jen Hastings announced the commitments of seven newcomers to attend the College and play softball beginning with the 2009-10 academic year. The seven future Mavericks are: Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, NY/Bellmore JFK), Kaylan Shoops (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc HS), Victoria Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham HS), Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield HS), Katie Mirabile (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey HS), Caitlin Rohme (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford HS), and Courtney Butler (Islip, NY/Islip HS).
"We are really excited about this recruiting class. I think they are going to come in and make an impact right away," Hastings said. "I expect them to help us tremendously with taking the program in the direction we want to go."
A first baseman/outfielder, Johnstone was a five-time varsity letterwinner for Bellmore JFK. She was named All-County in 2009, after earning All-Conference in 2008, and All-Division in 2007. Johnstone also played varsity volleyball for two years, earning a Scholar Athlete selection in 2008.
Shoops pitched and played the outfield for Grand Blanc High School, earning three varsity letters. She was a two-time All-Conference Second Team selection (2008 and 2009), and was an All-District First Team honoree in 2008. Shoops helped her squad to district championships in 2006 and 2008, and a regional title in 2006. For her career, she posted a 34-18 record with a 1.35 earned run average and 398 strikeouts, while batting .321.
Thomas is a catcher who played for four years at Roy C. Ketcham High School where she helped her squad to a pair of league championships in 2007 and 2008. Thomas also played field hockey for two years during her high school career.
Wabshinak was a four-year outfielder at New Fairfield High School. In 2009, she was an All-State First Team and All-Conference First Team selection after earning All-Division and All-Academic honors in 2008. Wabshinak was also a member of the indoor track squad, helping the 4x200 relay team to a fifth place conference finish in 2006-07.
A catcher/infielder from H. Frank Carey High School, Mirabile was a team captain and Most Valuable Player in 2009, earning a spot on the All-Long Island Second Team and All-County honors. She was also an All-County selection in 2008, and collected All-Conference honors in 2007. Mirabile batted .395 for her career with 60 runs batted in, a .500 on base percentage and 10 home runs.
An infielder/pitcher, Rohme joins the Mavericks after a stellar two-year career at Suffolk County Community College. She will be coming off a season in which she was named Region XV Player of the Year, All-Region First Team, All-American Second Team and Team Most Valuable Player. Rohme collected the honors after batting .514 for the year with 27 doubles, two home runs and 27 runs batted in over 20 games. She also earned Team Most Valuable Player and All-Region First Team honors in 2008.
Butler played the infield and outfield for the varsity squad at Islip High School for three years. She earned All-Conference honors in 2009 after she garnered All-League accolades in 2008, and All-Division and Rookie of the Year honors in 2007.
The group of newcomers will join a squad that returns eight letterwinners from 2009. The Mavericks finished the campaign 16-18, registering the program's highest win total since the 1987 season.
