Dowling Tops Mercy College Softball 5-2
BROOKHAVEN, NY
- The Mercy College softball team was defeated by
East Coast Conference (ECC) regular season champion Dowling College
by a score of 5-2 on Sunday.
Dowling (31-16, 15-3 ECC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the
first inning on Jackie Hannan's
(Sayville,
NY) RBI double. The Golden Lions
added a run in the third inning on Hannan's 16th home run of the
season.
Dowling stretched its lead to 3-0 in the fourth, but Mercy (16-18,
5-13 ECC) got the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI
double by junior Brittney Stockert
(Hawthorne,
NY).
The Golden Lions capitalized on a Mercy miscue to add a run in the
fifth. The Mavericks trimmed the deficit to 4-2 on a solo home run
by sophomore Chelsea Methot
(Bristol,
CT) - her team-leading fifth of
the season.
However, that's as close as the Mavericks would get, as Dowling
scored once more in the seventh.
Junior hurler Stephanie Pereyo
(Southington,
CT) pitched a complete game with
six strikeouts.
Methot went 2-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored and a home
run.
Hannan went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a home
run.
This was the Mavericks final regular season game. Head coach Jen
Hastings' squad won the most games since the 1987 campaign. Methot
and sophomore Paige Cauley (Stratford,
NJ) led the team in batting with a .357 average.
Sophomore Catherine Kowalski
(Melville,
NY) had a team-leading 27 RBI and
17 walks. Pereyo recorded 11 wins with a 3.29 ERA to lead the
Mavericks.
