NYIT Takes Down Mavericks 2-1 and 9-0

OLD WESTBURY, NY - The Mercy College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday to NYIT, falling 2-1 in the first and 9-0 in the second. The Mavericks' record is now 9-28 overall and 2-16 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.

In game one the Mavericks got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) led off the game with a single to center field and then junior Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) reached on an error to move Curry to second. Freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and then senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Curry around.

In the top of the third, the Bears got even on an RBI double by Lauren Sabia.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth, when the Bears scratched together a run to take a 2-1 lead. Katelyn Thomas was hit by the pitch to start the inning and then two sacrifice bunts later, Lia Lara hit a game-winning double to bring in Thomas.

Curry went 3-for-3 with one run scored. Freshmen Alicia Martin (Massapequa, NY) and Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) both collected a hit.

In game two the Bears jumped out in the second frame with a seven run inning. Accounting for most of the damage, Lisa Boystak and Sabia each had a two-run single.

The Mavericks were unable to muster an offensive attack against pitcher Marissa Brucculeri who allowed no runs and struck out one.

The Bears added two more runs in the fourth. The game was called after five innings.

Davidson and Madick both went 2-for-3. Freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) and sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) each had a base hit.

The Mavericks will wrap up its home season on Sunday, April 27 against C.W. Post in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
