Mercy College Softball Drops Two to New Haven

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College softball team dropped a pair of East Coast Conference (ECC) games to the University of New Haven on Tuesday, falling 9-5 in game one and 3-1 in game two. The Mavericks' record falls to 9-26 overall and 2-14 within the conference.

In game one the Chargers (22-16, 11-7 ECC) struck first with three runs in the first frame. Jess Medina drove in the first run on an RBI double and then two more runs came across on a Mavericks' error.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Mavericks got one back when senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) roped a double to drive in freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) from second base.

In the third inning, pitcher Meg Brown helped her own cause by hitting a two-run home run over the center field fence to go up 5-1. However, in the bottom of the inning freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) came up with two runners on and smashed a three-run home run to cut the deficit to one.

Each team plated one run in the fourth. With the score 6-5 going into the seventh, the Chargers got three insurance runs. Meg Walter hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, Medina hit an RBI double and to cap off the inning Brown hit an RBI single.

Freshman Alicia Martin (Massapequa, NY) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Methot went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Madick had one hit, two RBI and a run scored.

In game two the Mavericks got on the board in the first on an RBI double by Methot.

Sophomore Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) allowed the first batter to reach on a base hit, but didn't allow another hit until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Walter got the Chargers' offense going with an RBI single to tie the game at one. Breanne Gleason followed with a two-run double to take a 3-1 lead.

The Mavericks' offense threatened in the sixth, but was unable to bring any runs across.

Chargers' hurler Gleason threw a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out 11.

Freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) went 2-for-3, while Madick, Methot and freshman Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) each had one hit.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to play a doubleheader against NYIT.
