LaBella, Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader over Briarcliffe
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Briarcliffe College on Sunday, winning the first game 11-3 and the second 2-0. The Mavericks' record improves to 9-24 overall, while the Seahawks fall to 15-5.
Sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) earned the victory in both games. In game one she pitched four innings, allowing only two earned runs and striking out six. Game two marked LaBella's best pitching performance of the season, by pitching a complete game shutout in which she allowed only two hits and struck out nine.
The Mavericks got out of the gate quickly in game one, scoring two runs in the opening frame. After freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) walked and freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) singled, junior Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) laced a two RBI single to put Mercy up 2-0.
After Briarcliffe plated two runs in the top of the third, the Mavericks went to work in the bottom. First, Davidson roped an RBI single to left field to score Kowalski. Two batters later Davidson came home on a wild pitch and then freshman Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA). The Mavericks scored once more in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.
The teams traded runs in the fourth, and then in the fifth Curry hit an RBI single to score freshman Ali Truss (Southington, CT). Madick followed with a run scoring single of her own to put Mercy up 9-3.
Davidson went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Kowalski had two hits and scored twice, while Madick went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Freshmen Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) and Alicia Martin (Massapequa, NY) each had two hits.

Curry put down a bunt and beat out the play to load up the bases. Kowalski then reached on a fielder's choice, which scored the game's first run.
While LaBella continued to mow down batters, Mercy got a run in the fifth when Martin hit an RBI single to score Owsiany.
On the day, LaBella pitched 11 innings and gave up only two earned runs. She struck out 15, walked none and yielded four hits (two in each).
Martin went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Curry and Madick each went 1-for-2.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 22 when they take on New Haven in a doubleheader at home, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
