Mavericks Fall in Doubleheader to Bridgeport
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Mercy College softball team was defeated in a pair of games by Bridgeport University on Saturday, dropping the first game 8-0 and the second 4-3. The Mavericks' record falls to 7-24 overall and 2-12 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while Bridgeport improves to 17-17 overall and 9-5 in conference action.
After two scoreless innings in game one the Purple Knights got on the board first. With the bases loaded Brittany Steiner hit a two run double to take a 2-0 lead. Hannah Larson then singled in two more runs to cap off the rally.
The Purple Knights added a run in the fourth and tacked on one in fifth on an RBI single by Steiner to take a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT), junior Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) and freshman Ali Truss (Southington, CT) all collected a hit for the Mavericks.
In game two the Mavericks broke out the bats first with three runs in the second inning. Senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) started the inning off with a single to center field and then two batters later Truss walked. Freshman Alicia Martin (Massapequa, NY) blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
After Bridgeport got one back in the second, the Purple Knights had a three-run inning of its own in the third. Cassandra Lall doubled in a run and then two batters later Amanda Wentz hit a two-run home run to take a 4-3 lead.
In the sixth inning the Mavericks loaded the bases with one out, but were unable to plate any runs.
Martin went 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) and Davidson both went 1-for-3.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Sunday, April 20 at home in a doubleheader against Briarcliffe College beginning at noon.
