Mercy College Softball Drops Two to Concordia, 5-3 and 5-4
BRONXVILLE,
NY - The Mercy College softball
team rallied late in both ends of a doubleheader at Concordia, but
was defeated 5-3 in game one and 5-4 in extra innings in game two.
The Mavericks' record falls to 7-22 overall and 2-10 in East
Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Clippers improve to 7-17
overall and 3-11 in the conference.
In game one, Mavericks' hurler Stephanie Pereyo
(Southington,
CT) and Clippers' pitcher Tara
Giralo matched zeroes through the first four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth Concordia broke through on Alexa
Rosella's two-run triple and then scored on Julie Walsh's RBI
single to go up 3-0.
The Clippers added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth when
Ashley Spose singled to left field to drive in a run. Concordia
added one more in the frame on a Mavericks' error.
In the seventh inning the Mavericks got the offense going. Freshman

(Melville,
NY) and junior Jessica
Davidson (Valhalla,
NY) singled to get the inning
started. Senior Jessica Madick
(Tarzana,
CA) followed with an RBI single
to drive in Kowalski. Freshman Chelsea Methot
(Bristol,
CT) continued the rally with a
run scoring double to left field to bring Davidson home. On the
play Madick was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the
inning. Freshman Stephanie Owsiany
(Edison,
NJ) reached on an error by the
left fielder and Methot scored on the play to trim the deficit to
5-3. The Mavericks got the tying run to the plate, but Giralo got
the final out to end the rally.
Methot went 3-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Kowalski went
1-for-1 with three walks and a run scored. Owsiany added a hit and
one RBI.

Over the first four innings of game two, the Clippers
scored on a passed ball (second inning) and a sacrifice fly (fourth
inning) to go up 2-0.
In the top of the fifth the Mavericks got on the board by
capitalizing on a Clippers' error to bring home freshman
Kim Curry
(Bristol,
CT).
With the score 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth the Clippers looked
to add some insurance runs. Jaime Lorenzo tripled in a run and then
scored on Walsh's RBI single to go up 4-1.
The Mavericks started its comeback in the seventh as sophomore
Samantha LaBella
(Mamaroneck,
NY) singled through the left
side. Curry followed with a single and then Kowalski hit a
game-tying three-run home run over the left field fence.
Concordia went down in order in the bottom of the inning to send
the game into extra innings.
Neither team scored in the eighth, but Concordia scraped together a
run on Giralo's RBI single to take game two.
Kowalski went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Curry
collected two hits and scored two runs. Freshman Ali Truss
(Southington,
CT) chipped in with two hits.
The Mavericks will continue ECC action on Saturday when they travel
to Bridgeport for a doubleheader.
