Mavericks Split Doubleheader with Nyack
NYACK, NY - After coming up short in its late
inning comeback in game one (5-4), the Mercy College softball team
shutout Nyack College in game two 8-0 (five innings) on Monday. The
Mavericks' overall record this season is 7-20 and remains 2-8 in
East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
In game one, freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) led
the game off with a double and was brought home two batters later
on junior Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) RBI
single. Not to be outdone, the Warriors got the run back in the
bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Lynnae Thompson.
The big blow of the game was hit by Nyack's Christina Braziel who
hit a three-run home run and was 4-for-4 with four RBI in the
game.
Trailing 5-1 the Mavericks went to work in the sixth inning when
freshman Chelsea Methot
(Bristol,
CT) led off the inning with a
double. Freshman Alicia Martin
(Massapequa,
NY) promptly singled and then
stole second base. The catcher's throw went into the outfield
allowing Methot to score and Martin to advance to third. Freshman
Ali Truss
(Southington,
CT) brought Martin home on a
sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-3.
With two outs in the top of the seventh senior Jessica
Madick (Tarzana,
CA) started the rally by hitting
her first home run of the season. Methot and freshman
Stephanie Owsiany
(Edison,
NJ) followed with singles, but
the rally stalled there.
Curry and Methot each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Madick was
2-for-4 with a home run and Owsiany went 3-for-4.

Game two featured a solid pitching performance from sophomore
Stephanie Pereyo
(Southington,
CT). The Mavericks hurler pitched
a complete game shutout and allowed only four hits while striking
out four.
The Mercy offense got started right away with a two-run home run by
Madick. In the second inning the Mavericks scored two more runs on
an errant throw to take a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the third Owsiany smashed a double to drive in
Madick, while Pereyo continued to baffle Nyack hitters.
The Mavericks added to its lead in the fifth by plating three more
runs to take an 8-0 lead. Sophomore Samantha LaBella
(Mamaroneck,
NY) hit an RBI double to drive in
Martin from second base. The final two runs scored on an error.
Madick was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Martin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and LaBella went 1-for-3
with one run scored and one RBI.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday, April 17 for a
doubleheader at Concordia.
