Mercy College Softball Tripped Up in Doubleheader at Dominican
ORANGEBURG, NY - The Mercy College softball
team was defeated in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader
against Dominican College on Sunday, dropping the first game 9-1
(five innings) and the second 6-0. The Mavericks' record falls to
6-19 overall and remains 2-8 in East Coast Conference (ECC)
play.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Chargers (16-14)
got on the board in the second with a four-run frame. The big hit
of the inning was a pinch hit three RBI double by Kristi Dillon.
Dominican added one more in the inning on an RBI single to go up
4-0.
The Mavericks scored in the top of the third when freshman
Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) lined a base hit to right
field to bring home freshman Ali Truss (Southington,
CT).
The Chargers got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a
bases loaded walk, and then added to its lead in the fourth with
three more runs. Left fielder Sarah Beck knocked in two runs with a
double to right field to go up 7-1.
Curry went 1-for-3 with an RBI while junior Jessica
Davidson (Valhalla,
NY) and freshman Chelsea
Methot (Bristol,
CT) both went 1-for-2.
In game two, the Chargers offense got an early jolt when shortstop
Cara Piasecki led off the game with a solo home run.
With the Mavericks trailing 2-0 through three innings, Dominican
looked to stretch its lead in the fourth. The Chargers plated three
runs on an RBI single and two RBI doubles to take a 5-0 lead.
Chargers' hurler Laurie Edwards kept the Mavericks' offense in
check as she pitched a complete game shutout.
Freshmen Stephanie Owsiany
(Edison,
NJ) and Alicia Martin
(Massapequa,
NY) each collected a hit.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Monday when they travel to
Nyack to play a non-conference doubleheader.
