Mavericks Fall in Non-Conference Doubleheader, 6-1 and 14-2
SYRACUSE, NY
- The Mercy College softball team was defeated in
both ends of a doubleheader at Le Moyne College on Thursday,
dropping the first game 6-1 and the second 14-2 (five innings). The
Mavericks' record falls to 6-17 overall and remains 2-8 in East
Coast Conference (ECC) play.
In game one the Dolphins (22-8) jumped out to an early lead in the
first inning when Caitlin O'Neill hit an RBI single and was
followed by a run scoring double by Kelly Schweikert.
Le Moyne added to its lead in the second inning by plating three
runs. O'Neill capped the rally with a double down the left field
line to score Sarah Reed.
The Mavericks got on the board in the third by capitalizing on a
Dolphins' error to score freshman Catherine Kowalski
(Melville,
NY).
Mercy was unable to muster an offensive attack against Le Moyne
pitcher Caylinn Christophers who gave up only four hits.
Freshman Kim Curry
(Bristol,
CT) went 2-for-4, while senior
Jessica Madick
(Tarzana,
CA) and freshman Alicia
Martin (Massapequa,
NY) each had a hit.
Le Moyne scored five runs in the first inning of game two to force
Mercy to play from behind. The first five batters hit their way on
base as the Dolphins had seven hits in the inning.
In the top of the third Kowalski singled to centerfield to drive in
Martin from third base to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Dolphins responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring nine
runs in the frame. As Le Moyne batted around in the inning,
Schweikert first hit a two-run home run and then hit a three-run
shot to cap off the inning.
Kowalski was 1-for-3 with a run driven in and Martin was 1-for-1
with a run scored. Freshman Chelsea Methot
(Bristol,
CT) went 1-for-2 with a run
scored.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to
Dominican College for a doubleheader.
