Mavericks Drop Two to Spartans, 3-0 and 5-3
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College softball team fell in a pair of games to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, dropping the first 3-0 and the second 5-3. The Mavericks' record falls to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. St. Thomas Aquinas' record improves to 11-15 overall and 5-3 within the conference.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between Mavericks' hurler Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) and Jess Gogatz. Neither pitcher allowed a run in the first two innings, but the Spartans broke through in the third inning.
Jessie Kirsch got things started for the Spartans with a double to center field and then Gogatz singled Kirsch to third. After Amanda Brown was hit by the pitch to load the bases, St. Thomas Aquinas plated two runs on an error.
The Mavericks were unable to get much done offensively as Gogatz struck out eight batters while walking only one.
Freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) went 1-for-3 as did freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY).
In game two the Mavericks scored first with a two out rally in the first inning. Kowalski walked and then senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) singled. Freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) came through in the clutch with an RBI single to bring Kowalski home.

After the Spartans got on the board in the fourth inning, they scored four more runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. The big hit of the inning came via a three run home run by Karen Thorne. The Mavericks got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch that scored Curry.
However, Mercy was unable to push any more runs across the plate as Spartans pitcher Stephanie Sfraga completed the game.
Kowalski went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Methot went 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Le Moyne for a doubleheader.
