Adelphi Tops Mercy 3-1 and 11-0

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College softball team dropped a pair of games to Adelphi University, the first by a score of 3-1 and the second 11-0. The Mavericks' record falls to 6-13 overall and 2-6 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Panthers improve its record to 20-12 overall and 10-2 within the conference.

In game one the Mavericks got on the board first against Panthers' hurler Julia Schaper. Freshman Amanda McPhee (Bristol, CT) led the game off with a single and advanced to second on freshman Kim Curry's (Bristol, CT) sacrifice bunt. After freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) walked, senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) roped a single into left field to take a 1-0 lead.

Mavericks' pitcher Madick kept the Panthers off the board until the sixth inning when Adelphi took advantage of three Mercy errors to plate three runs.

Madick pitched six innings giving up two runs (zero earned) and struck out four batters.

The Mavericks were unable to come back against Schaper who struck out 11 batters.

 In game two, the Panthers jumped out first with a run in the first inning and then put up nine runs in the second. In the second, Schaper had an RBI double to make it 2-0 and then three batters later Diana DiPiano drove in two more runs with a single to left field. The biggest hit of the inning was by Christina O'Hara who hit a bases clearing triple to go up 9-0.

Mercy was unable to get anything going against pitcher Leighann Bell. She pitched four innings giving up only two hits.

On the day, sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) went 2-for-4. Madick had an RBI in game one and McPhee went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Mavericks will be back in action for a home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8 against St. Thomas Aquinas College beginning at 3 pm.
