Mavericks Fall to Queens College in ECC Softball, 4-2 and 5-0
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Queens College on Wednesday. The Lady Knights came from behind for a 4-2 win in the opener and posted a 5-0 decision in game two. The Mavericks are now 6-11 overall and 2-4 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while Queens improved to 10-12 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Freshmen Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) and Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) each went 3-for-6 on the day for the Mavericks. Curry was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener and Methot went 2-for-3 in game two. Freshman Amanda McPhee (Bristol, CT) was 2-for-4 in the first contest.
Mercy struck first in game one, collecting three hits in the third inning, including an RBI single from Curry. The Mavericks added a run in the fifth, taking advantage of an infield error that plated sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) to build a 2-0 lead.
Queens answered in the sixth with two runs to knot the game at 2-2. Nicole Mancusi (Staten Island, NY) scored the first run on a wild pitch and the other scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sue Hurley (Rockaway Beach, NY).

After Lady Knights starter Christy Sanders (Lindenhurst, NY) set the Mavericks down in order in the bottom of the inning, Queens got the go ahead runs on a Sara Koumou (Hicksville, NY) two-run home run over the center field fence. Sanders then retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame to close it out.
Mercy hurler Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) fanned five batters in seven innings. Sanders struck out four and allowed six hits.
The Lady Knights struck first in the nightcap, getting a pair of runs in the third, including an RBI from Koumou. They added a run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Hurley to take a 3-0 advantage, and tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the final score of 5-0.
LaBella fanned two in a complete game effort for the Mavericks. Bryttne Nelson (Bonney Lake, WA) went the distance for Queens, yielding five hits and striking out five.
Mercy returns to action on Saturday with another ECC twin bill at Concordia beginning at 1:00 p.m.
