Molloy Pitching Stumps Mavericks in Doubleheader

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - The Mercy College softball team dropped both games of a scheduled doubleheader to Molloy College on Sunday. The Lions won game one by a score of 5-0 and game two 9-1 in five innings. The Mavericks' record falls to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.

In game one freshmen Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) and Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) both went 2-for-3. Senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) collected one hit and walked in two official at bats. Junior Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) went 1-for-2. Sophomore Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) pitched a complete game, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and walking only two batters.

In the bottom of the second of game one the Lions (11-11, 6-2 ECC) got on the board when Lauren Urbont knocked in the runner from second base with an RBI single. In the third the Lions plated two more on two Mercy errors to go up 3-0.

Meanwhile, Lions' starting pitcher Amanda Havdoglous baffled Mercy batters as she pitched a complete game seven hit shutout.

In game two the Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on freshman Catherine Kowalski's (Melville, NY) second home run of the season. Mavericks' starting pitcher sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) threw up two zeros and then got into trouble in the third inning.

The Mavericks rallied to load the bases in fourth but were unable to bring any runners across.

Kowalski finished the day 2-for-3 with a home run and freshman Alicia Martin (Massapequa, NY) went 1-for-2.

The Lions' starting pitcher Florence Williams pitched a complete game on five hits and allowed just the Kowalski home run.

The Mavericks will be back in action at home on Tuesday, April 1 when they take on Queens College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
