Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader Against Dowling

BROOKHAVEN,
NY - The Mercy college softball
team swept a doubleheader on Monday against Dowling College,
winning game one 3-2 and the finale 10-3. The Mavericks improved
its' record to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in East Coast Conference (ECC)
play.
In game one, sophomore Stephanie Pereyo
(Southington,
CT) picked up her second win of
the year by pitching a complete game and allowing only one earned
run. She allowed seven hits, three walks and struck out five
batters. Freshman Chelsea Methot
(Bristol,
CT) went 3-for-3 with one RBI and
freshman Alicia Martin
(Massapequa,
NY) went 3-for-3 with two
RBI.
The Mavericks got on the board in the top of the second inning when
Martin hit a two RBI double to score junior Jessica
Davidson (Valhalla,
NY) and freshman
Stephanie Owsiany
(Edison,
NJ).
After Dowling (5-15, 0-2 ECC) plated a run in the bottom of the
second, the Mavericks added a run (3-1) in the third on a Methot
RBI single to score freshman Kim Curry (Bristol,
CT).
Leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Lions
got a run closer with an RBI double by senior Taras Wallace. Then
with the tying run on third and one out in the inning, Pereyo got a
big strike out and then got the third out on a groundout to seal
the victory.
The Mavericks' bats came alive in game two as they scored in four
of the six innings played. Freshman Catherine Kowalski
(Melville,
NY) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and
one run scored. Methot went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs
scored. Curry picked up one hit, drove in two runs and scored
twice.
Senior Jessica Madick
(Tarzana,
CA) earned her second victory of
the year, but got off to a rocky start. She gave up a run scoring
double to Wallace, but would only allow one more run in five
innings pitched.
Mercy put up a four-spot - all with two outs - on three hits and
one Dowling error in the third inning. Curry and Kowalski got the
inning going with back-to-back singles. After Madick walked to load
the bases, Methot smashed a double to knock in two runs. Two more
runs scored when Owsiany reached on an error by the shortstop.
Mercy led 4-1 after three innings.
In the fourth inning the Mavericks scored twice, highlighted by a
Kowalski RBI single to put Mercy up 6-1. Davidson hit a run scoring
single in the fifth to start another big inning. Freshman
Amanda McPhee (Bristol, CT) singled home Owsiany
and then Curry hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Davidson.
Sophomore Samantha LaBella
(Mamaroneck,
NY) pitched the final inning to
close out the victory.
The Mavericks will be back in action in a home doubleheader on
Friday against Post at 2:30 p.m.
