Mercy Offense Breaks Out in Game One, Drops Thriller in Game Two
COCOA BEACH,
FL - The Mercy College softball
team split a doubleheader on Tuesday, winning the first game 18-1
against Fisher College and dropping the finale against Farmingdale
State 3-1 in extra innings. The Mavericks' record is 4-7 this
season.
The Mavericks got a stellar pitching performance in game one from
senior Jessica Madick
(Tarzana,
CA) who threw a complete game
two-hitter, allowing one unearned run and striking out seven.
The offense didn't disappoint either as the Mavericks put up a
seven-spot in the first inning against Falcons' starting pitcher
Jackie Streeter. Mercy sent 12 batters to the plate and was helped
out by three Fisher errors and three bases loaded walks. Freshman
Kim Curry
(Bristol,
CT) reached base twice in the
inning. In her second at- bat she delivered an RBI-single to score
freshmen Alicia Martin
(Massapequa,
NY) and Ali Truss
(Southington,
CT) who came around on the play
due to an error.
In the bottom of the second the Mavericks kept on hitting, scoring
five more runs. Martin had the biggest hit of the inning with a
bases clearing triple to score Truss, freshman Stephanie
Owsiany (Edison,
NJ) and Madick.
Mercy continued to pour it on in the bottom of the third with six
runs in the frame. Freshman Chelsea Methot
(Bristol,
CT) tripled in freshman
Catherine Kowalski
(Melville,
NY) to start the inning. Freshman
Amanda McPhee
(Bristol,
CT) continued her solid play from
the lead-off spot with a 3-RBI double to score sophomore
Samantha LaBella
(Mamaroneck, NY), Martin
and Truss.
McPhee went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. Methot, last
week's East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Week, collected
two more hits, scored three runs and knocked in two. Truss had her
best game of the season with three hits, two runs driven in and
three runs scored. Martin drove in four runs and scored three
times.
Game two against Farmingdale State was a completely different story
as sophomore Stephanie Pereyo
(Southington,
CT) and Rams' hurler Heather
Buckshaw competed in a pitcher's duel.
Pereyo struck out the first seven batters to face her and neither
pitcher gave up a hit until the fourth inning.
The game remained scoreless into extra innings until Farmingdale
broke through in the eighth on an RBI groundout. However, the
Mavericks came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored on
a Martin RBI-single to bring around junior Jessica Davidson
(Valhalla,
NY).
In the ninth inning the Rams took the lead for good on a two-run
home run by clean-up hitter Kristina Cirillo.
Pereyo pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on
two hits and struck out a career high 14 batters.
The Mavericks will conclude their Cocoa Beach, FL trip on Thursday
with a doubleheader against Hamilton College.
