Mercy College Softball Splits Doubleheader to Centenary

COCOA BEACH, FL - The Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader on Monday against Centenary College, winning the first game 9-0 and losing the finale 5-4 in extra innings. The Mavericks' record is 3-6 this season and has four games remaining in Cocoa Beach.

The Mavericks got an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) who pitched a complete game three-hit shutout in game one.

Pereyo, who picked up her first win of the season, had plenty of offensive support with senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) hitting 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Freshman Amanda McPhee (Bristol, CT) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Week Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) continued her hot hitting going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored.

The Mavericks got the bats going in the first inning when McPhee led off with a single and quickly came home on a double from Methot.

While Pereyo kept the Cyclones scoreless, the Mavericks kept hitting and broke out with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. McPhee again led off the inning with a single and was moved up to second on a single by freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT). Madick delivered an RBI-single to score McPhee and Mercy tacked on four more runs before the inning came to an end.

In game two, the Mavericks and starting pitcher sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) fell behind in the first by allowing three runs on three hits and a walk.

However, Mercy stormed back with four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Curry got the scoring going with an RBI-single and freshman Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) followed with a run scoring double. LaBella added an RBI-single to score Owsiany to tie up the game.

Due to the international tie-breaker rule, the Cyclones began the eighth with a runner on second and were able to bring the game-winning base runner around to score.

The Mavericks will continue its Cocoa Beach trip on Tuesday with games against Fisher College and Farmingdale College.
