Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader against Grinnell, Mount St. Mary
COCOA BEACH,
FL - The Mercy College softball
team swept a doubleheader on Sunday against Grinnell College and
Mount St. Mary College by a score of 9-0 and 6-5, respectively. The
Mavericks' record improves to 2-5 on the season.
Sophomore Samantha LaBella
(Mamaroneck,
NY) pitched a complete game
three-hit shutout in game one, and went 2-for-2 at the plate with 2
RBI and a run scored. Freshman Jessica Kowalski
(Melville,
NY) went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, 2
runs scored and a stolen base. Freshman Amanda McPhee
(Bristol,
CT) had a 2-RBI double in three
at-bats.
The contest against Grinnell was scoreless until the Mavericks
broke out in the bottom of the fourth. After the first three
batters reached base in the inning, freshman Alicia Martin
(Massapequa, NY) slapped an RBI-single to score freshman
Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY). Jessica
Kowalski reached on an error to score senior Jessica Madick
(Tarzana,
CA) and then LaBella knocked in
Martin to go up 3-0. Freshman Stephanie Owsiany
(Edison,
NJ) scored on a passed ball and
McPhee capped off the six-run inning with a 2-RBI double.
The Mavericks scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth,
highlighted by an RBI-single by Jessica Kowalski and an RBI-double
by LaBella. The game was called at that point.
In game two, Mount St. Mary led 3-0 through five innings. In the
top of the sixth, the Mavericks put up its second six-spot of the
day to knock out the Blue Knights' starting pitcher Erin Lappe.
Jessica Kowalski started the scoring with an RBI-single to knock in
freshman Kim Curry
(Bristol,
CT). Martin smashed a double to
score Catherine Kowalski and Methot. With the score tied at three,
junior Jessica Davidson
(Valhalla,
NY) tripled in Martin and Jessica
Kowalski. After the Blue Knights replaced Lappe, Owsiany drove in
Davidson from third to give the Mavericks a 6-3 lead.
Mount St. Mary got a 2-RBI triple from Liz Carlson in the bottom of
the seventh to get within a run, but LaBella got Carolyn Hunt to
ground out to second to end the game with the tying run left 60
feet away.
LaBella picked up the win in relief and was the winning pitcher for
both of Sunday's games. McPhee went 2-for-4 and Davidson went
1-for-2 with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored and a walk.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Monday in Cocoa Beach, FL
when they play two against Centenary College.
