Mercy College Softball Drops Two Close Contests to Slippery Rock

COCOA BEACH, FL - The Mercy College softball team dropped a pair of close games to Slippery Rock University on Friday by a score of 6-4 and 5-4. The Mavericks' record falls to 0-5 this season.

After falling behind 4-0, the Mavericks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY).

In the bottom of the fifth the Mavericks' bats heated up. First, freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) smashed a two-run home run - her second of the season - and then Kowalski struck again lining an RBI-single to drive in freshman Amanda McPhee (Bristol, CT) to knot the game at four.

In the top of the seventh, the Rock got a clutch two-run home run to go up 6-4 off starting pitcher Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT).

In game two, the Mavericks took an early lead on a Kowalski RBI-single to score McPhee in the first inning. Both teams exchanged runs in the second and third innings.

With the Mavericks leading 3-2 in the fifth, Mercy tacked on an insurance run on an RBI-single by freshman Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) to score Methot.

In the bottom of the fifth the Rock got within one run (4-3) when sophomore Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) came in to pitch for senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) and walked in a run with the bases loaded, but was able to limit the damage.

Slippery Rock took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Stacey Rhoades to go up for good.

The Mavericks will be back in action in Cocoa Beach, FL when they play Grinnell College and Mount St. Mary on Sunday.
