Mercy Softball Defeated in Season Opener 10-1

NEW HAVEN, CT – The Mercy College softball team was defeated in its season opener by a score of 10-1 on Monday in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State University. The second game was tied at seven in the bottom of the fifth before it was called due to darkness. No makeup date has been announced.

In the first inning the Mavericks found themselves playing from behind when Southern Connecticut first baseman Brittany Gandley smashed a three-run home run down the left field line to give the Owls a 3-0 lead. In the second inning, Mercy threatened to score with two runners on base and one out, but pitcher Kerry Iacomini thwarted that plan by inducing a ground ball double play.

With the Owls leading 4-0 in the bottom of the third, Southern Connecticut added two more runs on two hits and two errors. Starting pitcher Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) ended the threat with two runners in scoring position by getting designated hitter Megan Caporossi to fly out to right field.

The Mavericks got on the board in the top of the fourth after junior Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) led the inning off with a single. She reached second on a fielder’s choice and then stole third. The next batter, freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT), drove Davidson in on a ground out to third base to cut the deficit to 6-1.

In the bottom of the fifth the Owls retaliated with a four-run inning, highlighted by a second home run by Gandley – this one of the two-run variety – to give the Owls a 10-1 lead.

Davidson finished the game 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. First baseman Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) was 1-for-2 in her first collegiate game.

Owls’ pitcher Iacomini pitched a complete game (five innings), allowing three hits, three walks, one run, while striking out four.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Georgian Court to play a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
