SPARKILL, NY - The Mercy College softball team fell in their final East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader of the season, on Sunday, April 29 at St. Thomas Aquinas. The Flyers finish the season 0-20 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Lady Spartans improved to 14-26 overall and 6-14 in the conference. Mercy dropped the first game by a score of 7-3, before coming up short in the second contest, 4-1.
Sophomore catcher Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) recorded two home runs, one in each of the games in the doubleheader. While freshman outfielder Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) connected for a two-run home run in the first contest. Junior pitcher Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) recorded eight strikeouts in five innings of work in the first contest, while freshman Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) had four in the second game for the Flyers.
In the first game, STAC took the lead in the first inning, plating one run and added three more in the third. Davidson cut the Lady Spartans' lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning, on a home run. STAC recorded two runs in the bottom of the inning and added one more in the fifth.
In the sixth inning, with Bia Pante (Vancouver, Canada) on base DeVore hit a 2-run home run, to make the final score 7-3. Madick walked one batter in the contest for Mercy. St. Thomas Aquinas's Andrea Martorelli earned the win, recording 10 strikeouts.
The Lady Spartans recorded one run in the third inning and added two more in the fifth, to go up 3-0, in the second contest. In the top of the sixth inning Davidson connected for her second home run in the doubleheader, going 1-for-2 in the contest.
STAC added one more run in the bottom half of the inning, taking the second game 4-1. Madick was 1-for-3 in the contest. Along with four strikeouts LaBella allowed one walk for the Flyers. Her counterpart, Stephanie Sfraga stuck out 10.
