Mercy College Softball Drops Two at NYIT, 14-1 and 9-1

            OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Mercy College softball team was defeated by host NYIT on Saturday, April 28, by scores of 14-1 and 9-1.   The Flyers are now 0-18 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Bears improved to 20-18 overall and 11-9 in the conference. 

            Junior centerfielder Jamie DeJesus (Sleepy Hollow, NY) connected for two hits in the second game of the doubleheader.  Freshman Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) and junior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) each recorded two hits and one RBI for the Flyers.  Senior Eileen Sacharewitz (Bedford, NY) had two hits, while sophomore Tannyka Bent (Queens, NY) and senior Lindsay Levassuer (Vancouver, Canada) each had one hit.

           In the first game of the doubleheader, NYIT recorded seven runs in the first inning before plating two in the second.  The Bears added one more in the third, making the score 10-0.

           Mercy recorded a run in the top of the fourth inning, on a Madick home run, making the score 10-1.  Queens scored four more runs in the bottom half of the inning, to make the final score 14-1.  Madick pitched the complete game for Mercy, recording one strikeout.  Her counterpart, Nina Cesare stuck out seven.

            In the second game, Mercy recorded the game's first run in the second inning.  The Flyers had back-to-back doubles by Bent and LaBella.  LaBella's hit would plate Bent, to put the Flyers up 1-0.  In the third inning NYIT put their first run of the board. 

            The Bears recorded four more runs in the fourth inning, to go ahead 5-1.  NYIT score two runs in each of the next two innings, to make the final score 9-1.  LaBella pitched the second game for the Flyers, she recorded four strikeouts.  NYIT's Ashley Petraglia earned the win, recording six strikeouts.   

            The Flyers will play their final contest of the season tomorrow, Sunday, April 29, when they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas.  The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
