Concordia Needs Extra Innings to
Take Two from Mercy College Softball

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Mercy College softball team was defeated by Concordia on Tuesday, April 24, by scores of 2-0 and 5-4, as both games went nine innings. The Flyers are now 0-14 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Clippers improved to 11-13 overall and 5-11 in the conference.
Junior pitcher Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) connected for four hits in the doubleheader, includng a homerun and recorded eight strikeouts in both contests. Five other Flyers each recorded at least one hit; Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA), Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY), Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY), Jessica Davidson (Valhalla, NY) and Lindsay Levassuer (Vancouver, Canada).
In game one of the doubleheader, neither team was able to plate a run until the ninth inning, when Concordia scored twice. The Clippers scored on two hits and an error by the Flyers, to take the first game 2-0, in nine innings. Madick recorded Mercy's only hits in the contest, going 2-for-4. She also struck out seven batters, walked one batter, and gave up five hits. Concordia's Tara Giralo had nine strikeouts and two hits.
In the second game, Mercy recorded the game's first run in the third inning. The Flyers had back-to-back singles by Baxter and Davidson and two batters later LaBella had an RBI-single to put the Flyers up 1-0. In the fifth inning Concordia and Mercy each scored two runs. Mercy scored two runs on two hits, a walk, and an error. The inning was highlighted by Levasseur's RBI-single, to put the Flyers up 3-2.
Each team added a run in the sixth inning. Madick hit a homerun to regain the lead for Mercy, 4-3. Concordia was able to add a run in the seventh and ninth innings to win the game 5-4. LaBella, Davidson, and Madick each went 2-for-4 in the contest. LaBella and Madick split the contest on the mound for the Flyers. Julianna LaBella recorded seven strikeouts for the Clippers.
The Flyers will be back in action on Wednesday, April 25, when they host ECC opponent Dowling. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
